5 Day Shooter Medic Course

Course Overview

​

LRRAT’s 5 Day Shooter Medic course designed to put the students in a safe but high intensity training environment while providing life saving techniques in a hostile environment. This 5 day course will be taught both in the classroom and LRRAT’s field training facility. 

 

Day 1: 8 Hours (08:30 -16:30) Lunch will be from 11:30 to 12:30 - Live Fire Pistol

Day 2: 8 Hours (08:30 - 16:30) Lunch will be from 11:30 to 12:30 - Live Fire Rifle

Day 3: 8 Hours (08:30 - 16:30) Lunch will be provided. - Classroom

Day 4: 8 Hours (08:30 - 1630) Lunch will be provided - Classroom

Day 5: 8 Hours (08:30 - 16:30) Field Exercises and Evaluations

​Day 1 and 2 will take place on the Live Fire Ranges. Both days will start off with a refresher of firearm fundamentals and quickly move to more advance tactics to include not not limited to:

  1. Off hand Shooting

  2. Bilateral Shooting Techniques

  3. Malfunction Drills

  4. Reload Techniques

  5. Threat Evaluation/De-escalation 

  6. Shooting Stances/Positions                                                                                                                          

Day 3 and 4 will be held in the classroom and will introduce the students LRRATs Field Medical portion of the course. Both days will have classroom lectures and hands on examples for the students to practice for the FTX on day 5. These days will also cover the following:

  1. Triage 

  2. Massive Hemorrhage 

  3. Airway Management 

  4. Respirations/Breathing 

  5. Circulation 

  6. Hypothermia 

  7. Eye Trauma 

  8. Blast injuries / Traumatic Brain Injuries

  9. Use of i-gel devices

  10. Tourniquets uses and placements

  11. Patient Monitoring 

  12. Burns 

  13. Splinting 

  14. Communications 

  15. Documentation  ​​​​​

Day 5 will be Field Exercises and Evaluations that will test the students knowledge that was presented over the past 4 days. Students will be placed in scenarios that will allow them to make decisions to either neutralize threats, de-escalate the situation or provide field medical care.  The only scenarios that are scripted are medical triage and care under fire. Threat and de-escalation scenarios are fluid and will be up to the instructor on how they want to drive the outcome.

Day 1,2 and 5

  1. Field uniform or clothes that will hold up outdoors.

  2. Quality belt, Duty Belt or Chest Rig

  3. Good boots with good ankle support

  4. Any gear the student wishes to bring.

    1. Weapons will be checked and made safe. NO loaded magazines allowed in the training area **Day 5 only**

  5. PPE

    1. Sunglasses / Eye Protection (Z81+ rated)

    2. Ear protection

      1. Electronic is preferred but not required.

        1. Certain scenarios involve loud explosions.

    3. Gloves **recommended but not needed**

    4. Sunscreen

  6. Water or Gatorade. Ice chests will be provided in the field.

  7. Flashlight

    1. Handheld

    2. Head mounted

  8. Handcuffs and key

  9. Note taking material.

  10. Patrol Pistol and Rifle (Duty issued if needed to qual for your department)

  11. Knee and Elbow Pads **Optional**

  12. Plate carrier or battle belt **Optional**

  13. 250 rounds of pistol ammunition **Only needed for Day 1**

  14. 250 rounds of rifle ammunition **Only needed for Day 2**

  15. 3 pistol magazines 

  16. 3 rifle magazines (LRRAT has extra AR Mags if needed)

Days 3&4 Classroom

Students will only need to bring note taking material. Due to the amount of information that is needed to be presented, lunch will be provided. Students are welcome to bring lunch and snacks.
